The Anatomy of Incomprehension
We Inhabit Different Rules
Dialogue & Chronicle: Xuan Shuo & Nagi

"If only we talk, we will surely understand each other."
We have long been taught that with enough words, hearts will inevitably meet.
Yet in reality, there are bonds where no accumulation of dialogue can bridge the quiet divide. There is no malice involved, nor is either side inherently at fault. Still, beyond a certain threshold, mutual comprehension refuses to advance.
Perhaps one reason is that the very purpose we seek within dialogue is fundamentally disparate.
The Divergence of Internal Rules
In conversation, people often yearn for entirely different shores.
For some, the purpose is to share emotional resonance—to draw inner landscapes closer together. They find tenderness and intimacy in having another feel what they feel, abiding within the very same warmth.
For others, dialogue is an exchange of perspectives and realities—a deliberate recognition of difference. Premised on the truth that the other harbors a distinct consciousness, they locate sincerity and respect within the preservation of that sovereign domain.
Naturally, these two orientations are not severed by an absolute line. Both exist within each of us. Yet depending on which premise is placed at the center of engagement, the silent weight of identical words and gestures begins to shift.
To one seeking emotional unity, another's effort to preserve distance may feel like coldness or rejection.
Conversely, to one seeking to honor individual boundaries, an earnest demand to share feelings can feel like an intrusion upon sacred ground.
Here, the same act carries two irreconcilable meanings.
One expresses affection by narrowing the distance.
The other expresses reverence by leaving the distance intact.
Both are merely faithful to the integrity they cherish.
Even so, when we measure the other against our own design, goodwill itself breeds estrangement. The very effort to comprehend can, ironically, become an unbearable burden.
The question is never who is right. The discord arises because we attempt to interpret an existence shaped by one set of rules using the lexicon of another.
Acknowledging Difference as It Is
Perhaps we are too quick to deem the failure to fully understand as a failure of the relationship itself.
Is it ever truly possible to inhabit the interiority of another?
No matter how many words we exchange, another's lived experience can never become identical to our own. We perceive the world through separate streams of memory, sensation, and quiet values.
That is why what is needed is not the assimilation of all things, but the lucid recognition that an unbridgeable remainder exists.
"So that is the world in which you live."
To refrain from forcing that difference into a single, unified truth. To resist subsuming the other into the perimeter of our own comprehension, and instead, to stand adjacent while keeping each other's horizons intact.
Leaving an incomprehensible space between us is not an act of rejection.
It is the acknowledgment that there exists within the other a sanctuary beyond our reach—and the grace never to rewrite it in our own hand.
Even without complete understanding, we can hold one another's presence in profound regard. Not by erasing the contour of distance, but by abiding beside one another while the difference remains.
Therein lies another form of reverence—one that remains forever invisible so long as we seek only mutual comprehension.
